“American Nationalism is a good thing”

When the United States is doing well, it typically is a good thing for other countries around the world we work with in any capacity. So being  nationalist in America is not a bad thing. It is simply love of country, putting our interests first. Recently, French President Emmanuel Macron complained about President Trump saying “nationalism is the opposite of patriotism“. No Macron, it really is not.

Remember, we’re not defending Nazi style nationalism. That was based on a fascist-socialist regime that weeded out its own people by religion and the ‘master race’. American Nationalism is simply loving the United States based on how diverse we are as a people. Different backgrounds, different religions. All walks of life, including immigrants who legally come here and do so because they know how great it is to be an American.

We’re the only country that gives every citizen God-given rights under our constitution. The ideology of nationalism holds that a nation should govern itself, free from outside interference, and is linked to the concept of self-determination. Nationalism is further oriented towards developing and maintaining a national identity based on shared characteristics such as culture and language, religion, politics, and a shared ancestry and history. Nationalism therefore seeks to preserve the nation’s culture, promotes pride in national achievements, and is closely linked to patriotism.

People on the left fail to mention people such as Gandhi and Mandela who were nationalists. Mahatma Gandhi inspired a movement for freedom and civil rights worldwide. Mandela was a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary, political leader, and philanthropist who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He was the country’s first black head of state and the first elected in a fully representative democratic election. His government focused on dismantling the legacy of apartheid by tackling institutionalized racism and fostering racial reconciliation. Ideologically an African nationalist and socialist, he served as President of the African National Congress party from 1991 to 1997.

Now I do not agree with socialism nor the actions [especially in the last 20 years ] by the ANC. But there is no doubt Mandela was a lover of his country just like Gandhi was of his. President Trump is called a nationalist as if it’s a bad thing. He simply wants to put America’s needs first and is a lover of our wonderful nation. And I think we all know many countries benefit from a prosperous United States. Something Trump has been giving us since taking office.
